| Young, Yenish, criss-crossing Switzerland |
| The film accompanies Pascal, Miranda, Jeremy and Franziska, young Yenish aged 17 - 25, in caravans on their way through Switzerland. For a closer look at what it means to experience the «gipsy» way of life, authors Karoline Arn and Martina Rieder join the Yenish on the road. |
They want to highlight what it means to be Swiss, living in Switzerland, yet in a social sphere that is far from integrated with the «norm». Yenish people have their own language and religion. They insist on hearing the rain and feeling the wind. In winter they live in 7x7m containers. In spring their yearly journey begins, and the race decides who gets the best parking, not least because they face fierce competition from the Sinti and Roma.
They are forced to defend themselves not only against these other groups of gipsies but also against «regular» societys' prejudice. This film aims to highlight what differentiates the Yenish from other gipsy folk and what makes them Swiss. For in their hearts they are Helvetian: and Yenish. |
