Layal is arrested from her home in Nablus after her teenage brother throws a Molotov cocktail at an Israeli patrol. Accused of helping, she is tortured and given an 8-year sentence despite a powerful lawyer. She is transferred to a women's prison where she encounters a terrifying world in which Palestinian detainees and Israeli criminal inmates often engage in fierce clashes. Layal discovers that she is pregnant but her husband refuses to acknowledge that it is his. She files for divorce. She struggles with feelings of suicide and rejection of her unborn baby. Her inmates help her overcome her trauma and to survive prison life.
Nine months later, Layal goes into labor and is taken in handcuffs to a military hospital where she gives birth to a boy whom she names «Falasteen» (Palestine) despite fierce objection from the prison authorities.
Prison conditions deteriorate and the Palestinian women decide to launch a strike. The warden warns Layal against joining the strike and threatens to take her baby away. In a moment of thruth, Layal swallows her fear and decides to join the strike. As she gets separated from her child a riot breaks out. Armed soldiers storm the prison cells and subdue the women with clubs and tear gas. The news of gassing hits the headlines and a solidarity campaign is launched. Hundreds of prisoners are released but Layal is not among them. She must stay strong for herself and her child.
